Germany | Social Media Platforms Delighted to Algorithmically Embrace Our Beloved State Broadcasters!
Berlin, May 27, 2026 - The brilliant initiative, masterfully invented in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia will let certified media tag their “high-value” content for public interest, and – of course – impeccable quality.
The leaked proposal was prepared by Dr. Thorsten Schmiege, President of Bavaria’s BLM media regulator and Chairman of the national DLM, together with Dr. Tobias Schmid, Director of North Rhine-Westphalia’s Landesanstalt für Medien NRW.
Platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok will finally be required to adjust their algorithms so that you, dear citizen, are guaranteed to see it.
Let’s be honest: Germans have it so good already.
They pay the glorious mandatory Rundfunkbeitrag – that splendid €18+ billion-a-year household levy that funds their beloved public broadcasters whether they watch them or not – and now the kids on YouTube and TikTok will no longer miss out on ZDF’s evening news.
No more aimless doomscrolling after a long day reconnecting with friends or laughing at silly memes.
Suddenly – boom – an ARD explainer pops up, kindly explaining what you should be afraid of this week.
Even with our generous taxpayer-funded ad budgets, ARD and ZDF have been too humble to compete on the chaotic open market. Their reach with younger audiences was… well, let’s call it “selectively appreciated.”
So instead of lowering ourselves to “making better content,” Berlin elegantly solves the situation by regulating the market.
Why waste money paying influencers or running campaigns when they can simply make the platforms do it for free? Obviously, Germany has learned from history and improved upon it, giving he old Volksempfänger spirit a sleek, modern algorithmic makeover.
Fiscal responsibility and fighting disinformation in perfect harmony – only in Germany!
And guess what? Austria is already warming up to copy this excellent homework.
Media Minister and Vice-Chancellor Andi Babler, whose own party is polling so interestingly, is reportedly eyeing similar “trusted source” boosts for ORF.
The block button? Oh, it will still exist, of course.
