American “Free Speech” is “The Opposite of Free Speech”, says Macron

Hitting someone, stabbing someone, insulting someone online and damaging someone’s property are all examples of exceeding the permissible limits of "our freedom". Information, Macron says, has to be treated within “public order.” People posting inconvenient things online should feel the consequences to save "our democracy".

American “Free Speech” is “The Opposite of Free Speech”, says Macron

Speaking at Complutense University in Madrid on September 29, Macron said freedom only exists within limits imposed by the freedom of others and a “common framework.”

He imagines a “public order” where information itself has to be treated within that framework because society has “a relationship with truth.”

Europe needs “trusted third parties”, fact-checking structures that can “restore” facts and enforce the EU’s Digital Services Act “much more, much faster, much more forcefully,” pointing toward an European solution implementing image recognition, hand-based technology and artificial intelligence.

He had written to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

He also wants greater responsibility placed on people distributing content online, so they can face legal consequences when they publish "wrong" material.

There is one minor complication.

In August, France’s own Constitutional Council raised objections to the French law intended to protect minors on social networks. Macron responded by ordering a rewrite.

Violent mobs are a normal part of public life.

Let’s get those pesky online commenters first. This is not America, where you can call the president a lying, corrupt, useless, power-drunk buffoon, post a meme of him looking like a boiled ham, and go make dinner!
