British Citizens Ask: Is a Democratic Failure Running for Years the Absence of Democracy?

A new way to run a border. UK government that knows the crossings are coming, knows most of the country wants them stopped, and still meets the boats and disperses the passengers. This is choosing the fight with its own voters over the fight with the courts, the contractors and France. It does not look sane from the town where the coaches arrive.

British Citizens Ask: Is a Democratic Failure Running for Years the Absence of Democracy?

Small boats immigration has been a thing since 2018 and accounts for about 205,000 arrivals from 2018 to June 2026, drawn from Home Office figures.

Frankly, this number doesn't startle.

The boats are only the bit of the iceberg Britain can film.

The actual rest people are angry about is legal, larger, and older.

In 2021, the White British share in England and Wales fell to 74.4%, down from 87.5% in 2001, and those figures predate the 2023 migration surge, when 1.47 million long-term immigrants arrived in the UK.

A child born in the UK is not included in this statistic.

Muslim population has grown to 6.5%, up from 3% in 2001, with a median age of 27.

Christians were at 51.

That creates demographic momentum even if immigration suddenly went to zero tomorrow.

In 2024 about 13.1 million people in the UK had been born abroad, 19 percent of the population, up from 5.3 million in 2004.

The British Muslim population is highly concentrated and has started to dabble in British politics.

At 6.5%, Britain has a Muslim mayor of London and about 25 Muslim MPs.

Britain is debating demographic change using outdated data.

The last census was taken in 2021. The next census of England and Wales is scheduled for 2031.

Britain is therefore running an experiment whose result is announced ten years later.

The transformation produced by legal migration, population growth and communities becoming permanent parts of British life is establishing facts, which are being noticed by politics and of course, the policy adapts accordingly.

On Sunday night, 4 October, a dinghy carrying 149 people was shadowed by French rescue vessels until it reached English waters, where two RNLI boats took over.

They brought the passengers into Haslar Marina in Gosport. Coaches and ambulances were already waiting. The passengers were then taken to Home Office facilities in Kent for processing.

The Home Office called this its established “contingency plans.”

Around 350 protesters turned up. There were scuffles with police. Twelve people were arrested.

Britain is not compelled by physics to run its border this way. It could pursue a policy built around non-admission, interceptions and returns. It could put far more pressure on France to stop launches and dismantle the smuggling networks.

It deliberately chose to handle the crossings against its citizens’ wishes, disperse the arrivals inland and contain the protest instead.

Britons have repeatedly voted for governments promising a radical immigration stop. The direction stayed the same anyway.

One day, the answer to “Can this still be reversed?” may simply be: “NO”.
