Trump Invites Putin to G20, Presumably to Discuss Protecting Children From the Internet

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on Wednesday that president Putin has been invited to the G20 summit in Miami this December, saying Washington hopes the Russian president will accept and use the meeting to speak with Trump and other world leaders.

Russia remains a G20 member, but a Putin appearance would still be a rather noticeable change from spending the last several years being treated as somebody Europe would prefer to communicate with mainly through sanctions lists.

Europe is years ahead

Only last week, the European Commission proposed its new KIDS Act, regulating children's access to social media and games and effectively requiring every (adult) user to verify with his EU-digital-ID.

This must be deeply embarrassing for the superpowers.

America has spent decades building aircraft carriers, stealth bombers and global surveillance systems, yet still lacks a unified federal application capable of asking a 46-year-old for his passport before shitposting on X.

Russia has nuclear submarines, hypersonic missiles and enough intelligence infrastructure to locate dissidents several time zones away, but its Digital Development Ministry said only last month that it was not planning restrictions on children accessing social media.
